ACL Reconstruction

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the main stabilizing ligament of the knee. Often, the ACL can tear, because of a physical or sports injury that causes the knee to “buckle” during activity. ACL injuries usually occur during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction.

These types of injuries can be devastating for athletes and athletic individuals. That said, an ACL tear is one of the most common injuries seen by orthopedic surgeons and is the most common complete ligamentous injury in the knee. The symptoms can include persistent pain, joint stiffness and a restricted range of motion. When a tear is diagnosed, ACL reconstruction surgery is used to rebuild the ligament.

In the field of ACL reconstruction, Dr. Howell is the designer of the 65° Tibial Guide and EZLoc/WasherLoc anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction system, and IDEAL feomoral tunnel for Zimmer Biomet Sports Medicine. This advanced procedure enables patients to rapidly recover motion and function without bracing and return to sports and other activities just 4-5 months after ACL reconstruction. As a consultant for Zimmer Biomet Sports Medicine, Dr. Howell has developed instrumentation, implants, and educational materials for ACL reconstruction, which are used nationally and internationally.
