Dr. Howell is an experienced clinician and researcher in the field of knee replacement, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and sports medicine. His practice focuses on the treatment of sports-related injuries and degenerative processes in the knee and shoulder area. Dr. Howell graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1981. He interned at the Graduate Hospital, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1982 and served his residency in the Orthopaedic Department at Thomas Jefferson University from 1982 to 1986.
Dr. Howell blends a very busy clinical and research practice. He is cofounder of OtisMed, Inc (www.otismed.com) and the surgeon responsible for the design of the Custom Fit OtisKnee (www.customfitknee.com). The OtisKnee uses Shape-Matching technology to custom fit a total knee replacement to an individual's anatomy. He is the designer of the 650 Tibial Guide and EZLoc/WasherLoc anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction system for Biomet Sports Medicine. He is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department in the Division of Biomedical Engineering at U.C. Davis. He works very closely with Prof. Dr. Maury Hull on biomedical engineering projects concerning total knee arthroplasty, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and disorders of the meniscus. His research team's work has been instrumental in mapping the precise location for placing the tibial and femoral tunnels in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction to allow aggressive rehabilitation and improve the consistency of the clinical outcome. He has over 80 publications in peer-review journals Dr. Howell has been fortunate enough to share the information from his research team at both international and national meetings. He is President of the International ACL Study Group, and a member of Herodicus Society, International Society of Arthroscopy Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, North American Arthroscopy Association, and past member of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, He is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Knee journal. |
